This weekend I’m going to NEXT to cover this new gaming and consumer electronics event for DV Hardware.
To be honest, I’m not sure what to expect from this expo as it’s the first edition of this show. The NEXT event has grown out of a gaming expo called Gamepower Expo which used to take place in Ghent, but it’s now double the size and hosted in Brussels. Instead of a primary focus on gaming, the show has split its attention to both gaming and consumer electronics.
NEXT says it’s the biggest tech event in the Benelux but there aren’t really a lot of big gaming or consumer electronics events in Belgium or the Netherlands. The biggest ones in Europe are hosted in Germany, in March there’s CeBIT in Hannover and in August there was the Games Convention in Leipzig, but that event will move to Cologne next year and will live on as GamesCom.
About a decade ago there was a very similar expo in Brussels, it was called Media Planet. I visited two editions of Media Planet but IIRC there wasn’t really a lot to see in 2003, the year before it got axed. Hopefully NEXT will be better.
