Stardust review

stardust.jpgIt’s been a couple of weeks since I last did a movie review, mainly because I was too lazy lol. Last Sunday I saw Stardust, I checked it out because of its high IMDB ratings but didn’t really expect much from it as it looked pretty childish. Turns out my first impression was wrong, this movie was a pleasant surprise.

Stardust is a romantic fantasy movie based on a book by Neil Gaiman. The story begins in a 19th century English town called Wall, which is built not far from a wall that is a forbidden portal to a magical realm named Stormhold. Stormhold is a mysterious fantasy world where all sorts of magic, witches, unicorns and even flying ships are reality.

The main star of the movie is a young man named Tristan, he lives in Wall with his father and tries to win the heart of the beautiful Victoria which doesn’t seem to be interested in Tristan at all. At the start of the movie he takes her on a date and they witness a fallen star. At this point Victoria promises Tristan that she would marry him if he retrieves the fallen star before her birthday.

When Tristan tries to enter the magical Stormhold the gatekeeper prevents him from doing so and tells him that he’s exactly like his father who tried the same thing when he was Tristan’s age. Back home Tristan confronts his father and learns that his mother lives in Stormhold and is the slave of a witch. Tristan’s dad gives him a letter from his mother which is wrapped around a magical Babylon candle that can take you wherever you want. Tristan attempts to use the candle to meet his mother but accidentally thinks of Victoria and the fallen star and ends up at the crash site.

That’s when you learn that a fallen star in Stormhold isn’t just a piece of rock – the fallen star appears to be a beautiful woman named Yvaine. Tristan wants to take her to Wall to impress Victoria but Tristan is not the only one interested in Yvaine. The lord of Stormhold just died and his sons need to kill the star to become king and then there’s also an evil witch, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, who wants to eat the star’s heart to become young again.

Yvaine and Tristan

Stardust is a beautiful enchanting fantasy tale with some romance and some comical elements. One of the more amusing parts in this movie is the encounter with Robert De Niro who plays the role of a flamboyant pirate but I can’t really tell much about this without spoiling it. This movie was a lot better than I expected and I rate it 9 stars out of 10.

One of the evil witches. I bet horses would be a bit faster though
