Top 50,000 blogs made $500 million in 2006

Chitika and the University of Texas unveiled a report on the earnings of blogs: Blog Dollars Study (PDF). According to Chitika their goal was to put a figure on the total amount of money that is spent on advertising in the blogosphere.

What they found is that the top 50k blogs (based on Technorati ranking) generated $500 million in ad revenue last year. Here’s the summary:

· The top 1% accounted for approximately 20% of the total revenue.
· The top 5% accounted for approximately 50% of the total revenue.
· The top 10% accounted for approximately 80% of the total revenue.
· The top 15% accounted for approximately 90% of the total revenue.

Not sure how accurate these numbers are though, the methodology Chitika used in this research is kinda questionable.

By the way, I also read on TechCrunch today that Discovery has acquired the treehugger.com blog for $10 million. Not bad at all. TreeHugger is ranked 17th in Technorati and according to the report the site gets about 1.4 million unique visitors a month.
