Letters from Iwo Jima review

Yesterday I watched Letters from Iwo Jima, this is a movie about the Battle of Iwo Jima between the U.S. and Japan in WO II. Iwo Jima is a relatively small island located about 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo.

Contrary to the movie Flags of our Fathers, this one tells the story from the Japanese perspective. Most of the actors in this movie are Japanese and most parts of the movie were spoken in Japanese with subtitles. While I was watching this movie I got the impression that it could be a Japanese production but when the credits start rolling over the screen you’ll notice that it was directed by Clint Eastwood.

The movie focuses a lot on the emotions and thoughts of the Japanese soldiers. Conditions on the islands are pretty bad and most of the soldiers know that the chances aren’t really high that they’ll leave the island alive. The Americans are coming and they (the Japanese) will be hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned.

Letters from Iwo Jima

If you like this kind of movies it’s well worth seeing, I give Letters from Iwo Jima a 8/10.
