Dogs and cats – playing around with the 450D
Apr 1st, 2008 by Thomas De Maesschalck
I tested my new Canon EOS 450D dSLR today by shooting some new pics of all our pets. I still have a lot of learning to do though, this is my first SLR camera and I still need to get familiar with all the features it offers.
First up are two photos of Darco.
Here he’s having a drink from our pond. Darco doesn’t mind getting wet, sometimes he just sticks both his feet in the water when he’s drinking
.
Caramel is one of our two cats, he’s pretty photogenic.
And here’s a picture of Pruts:
I also tried taking some shots of products like CPU coolers and I immediately noticed the difference between my old compact camera and this dSLR. To get nice bright shots of products I had to use a tripod with the compact camera so I could use long shutter times while the dSLR catches a lot more light and allows me to take most pictures without needing to mount the camera onto a tripod.

Hey, looks like you got a really nice camera there. I’m a Nikon guy myself. Picked up my first DSLR almost two years ago and have since upgraded once and tried a few different lens.
While you can get some really nice shots using auto mode, its pretty important, especially with product photos, to really learn at least the basic features of your camera and how they work. Stuff like aperture and ISO can be really beneficial to making certain photos come out perfect.
I learned a good deal on my own and then took a photo class for about two months in school which helped tremendously.
Looking forward to seeing some more pics from the new camera. Have fun!
Thanks. I already know a bit about shutter times, aperture and ISO settings but I still need to learn a lot on how to take advantage of all these settings to get the perfect shot.
Pruts is so lovely
